Kozunak Recipe: How to make Bulgarian sweet bread for Easter

Easter is on the way, and you may fancy something different to the usual chocolate eggs. Kozunak is a traditional sweet bread that is usually prepared for Easter in Bulgaria. Why not give it a try this year?

Ingredients:

  • 4-5 eggs
  • 1 and ½ tea-cup of sugar
  • ½ tea cup sunflower oil
  • 1 and ½ tea cup whole milk
  • 5 kg flour
  • 42 g yeast

Preparation:

Mix the ingredients well with the heated milk and add the yeast. Continue mixing until the dough starts making bubbles. The mass of it should become triple from the one you have started with. Leave for 2 hours to leaven. Separate it into three strips and add raisins and crushed walnuts if you like. Braid the three strips and put in a pan of your choice. Spread one stirred egg on top and put sugar over. Bake for about 40-45 minutes at 200 degrees. Before taking out of the oven, try with a toothpick whether it is ready or not. Enjoy!
