The best of celebrities in 2014

There were a couple of events that marked 2014 – Ellen Degeneres’ selfie at the Oscars, Robbin Williams’ death or the first Victoria Secret show in London. As we are less than a month away from the new year, let’s remember those moments. 


James Avery, Fresh Prince Of Bel Air’s Uncle Phil, died suddenly at the age of 68 of complications after an open heart surgery. Alfonso Ribeiro, who played Avery’s on-screen son tweeted: ‘I’m deeply saddened to say that James Avery has passed away. He was a second father to me. I will miss him greatly.’

Justin Bieber‘s private jet is held and searched for marijuana at the New Jersey airport. According to the police a strong odor of pot was dettected in the plane where him and his father were flying to see The Super-Bowl.

The 56th Annual Grammy Awards were held on January 26 in the Staples Center, Los Angeles. Daft Punk was the big winner of the night taking the Grammy for Best Album of the Year and Best Record of the Year with “Get Lucky” featuring Pharel Williams and Nile Rodgers.


On the 2nd of February, American actor, director and producer Philip Seymour Hoffman, was found dead in his Manhattan appartment. Office of Chief Medical Examiner of New York City determined that the Oscar-winning actor died of “acute mixed drug intoxication including heroin, cocaine, benzodiazepines and amphetamine”.

The Brit Awards were held on the 19th of February at the 02 arena in London. The big winners of the night were The Artic Monkeys, who won two awards – British Group and MasterCard British Album of the Year- and Sam Smith who won the Critics’ Choice Award.


The 86th Oscars ceremony was help on the 2nd of March at the Dolby Theatre in Hollywood, Los Angeles. The award show was presented by Ellen Degeneres who took the most talked, shared and recreated selfie with some of the most famous actors of Hollywood – Jennifer Lawrence, Brad Pitt, Bradley Cooper, Meryl Streep, Julia Roberts, Angelina Jolie. The big winners of the night were “Gravity” which won seven awards and “12 years a slave” which took three Oscars, including Best Picture. Once again Leonardo DiCaprio didn’t win the award for Best Actor, instead actor Matthew McConaughey did it for his role in “Dallas Buyers Club”.



25 year-old Peaches Geldof was found dead at her house in Kent by her husband. Geldof died of a heroine overdose 10 times stronger than the one that had killed her mother several years ago. Hours before her death she posted a photo on Instagram of her and her mom “Me and Mummy”. Peaches had two children, her 11 month-old son was with her when she overdosed.


On the 24th of May, Kim Kardashian marries rapper Kanye West in Italy. Amongst the 600 guests, were Italian tenor Andrea Boccelli, singer John Legend and founder of “The Pussycat Dolls” Robin Antin.


American actor and comedian Tracy Morgan was in a critical condition after car crash. The comedian was in a limo bus with six others when the driver of a truck, who hadn’t realised the traffic had slowed down, hit them from behind. The vehicle crashing into others and then tipped over. One of the passengers from the limo, Tracy’s comedy writer, was killed.



Bill Gates, Rihanna, Eminem, Justin Timberlake or even Oprah, are some of the celebrities who took part of the ALS Ice Bucket Challenge. The concept of the challenge was to get wet with the frozen water/ice, donate and then nominate other people to do it.


The MET Gala, is an annual fundraising gala for the benefit of the Metropolitan Museum of Art’s Costume Institute in New York City happened on the 5th of May. Even though it is a show of celebrities wearing the most fancy dresses, depending on the theme of the evening, this year’s event was marked by a very unusual accident. A video of Beyonce, Jay-Z and Solange Knowles was released, by TMZ, while they were on the lift. Solange, Beyonce’s sister, appears attacking Jay-Z while a securiy guard interneves. A couple of days later a statement was made in order to clarify the incident: “Jay and Solange each assume their share of responsibility for what has occurred. They both acknowledge their role in this private matter that has played out in the public. They both have apologized to each other and we have moved forward as a united family.”

“Glee” actress Becca Tobin‘s boyfriend Matt Bendik was found dead in a hotel room. The body was found by a maid. The actress was accompanying her 31 year-old boyfriend in a business trip, as he is a nightclub owner. It is still unknown the cause of death but some report that he might have died of a heart attack caused by stress.

The world woke up shocked and sad as American actor and comedian Robin Williams was found dead on the 21st of August in his California house. The actor commited suicide by hanging himself. According to his wife Susan Schneider, he was sober but was dealing with depression, anxiety and was in the early stages of Parkinson’s disease. Williams was an incredible actor; known for his amazing skills of improvisation, he had an impressive career. In 1997 he won an Oscar for Best actor in “The Therapist”; “Good morning, Vietnam”, “Mrs. Doubtfire” “Patch Adams”, “Hook” or “Aladdin” will be forever remembered for his spectacular performances.

Nicki Minaj extravagant “Anaconda” video broke Vevo’s record for the most views in 24 hours. In just a day the video was watched more than 19.6 million times, taking Miley Cyrus’ “Wrecking Ball” video’s place (with 19.3 million views in 24 hours).


On September 8th, the Royal Family announced that Kate Middleton and Prince William were expecting their second child.

American actor George Clooney marries human right lawyer Amal Alamuddin in Venice, Italy. The bride wore a stunning Oscar de La Renta dress; the weekend wedding is believe to have costed $13 million. Among the guests were actor Matt Damon, Billy Murray, superl model Cindy Crawford, singer Bono, from U2.

Victoria Beckham opens her first store in Dover Street, London, since the launched of her fashion brand in 2008. The 6,040 square foot store is a culmination of two years of hard work.


Fashion designer Oscar de la Renta passed away at the age of 82 on the 20th of October in Kent, Connecticut, USA after a long battle against cancer. From actresses Audrey Hepburn, Sarah Jessica Parker, Jennifer Lawrence and former First Ladies Laura Bush and Hillary Clinton and the actual First Lady Michelle Obama, Oscar was beloved by a lot of people.

On the 21st of October, at ELLE’s 21st annual Women In Hollywood Awards at the Four Seasons Hotel in California, actress Renée Zellweger “shocked” the world as she appears to look a lot different from what we were used to. Some say she looked almost unrecognizable but when asked about her new look Zellweger said that. “Perhaps I look different. Who doesn’t as they get older?” she said, adding: ”My friends say that I look peaceful. I am healthy”.

British actress Emma Watson delivers an inspiring speech on feminism and gender as U.N. Women Goodwill Ambassador, for the campaign “He For She” that seeks to end the iniqualities between men/boys and women/girls:” I am from Britain and think it is right that as a woman I am paid the same as my male counterparts. I think it is right that I should be able to make decisions about my own body. I think it is right that women be involved on my behalf in the policies and decision-making of my country. I think it is right that socially I am afforded the same respect as men. But sadly I can say that there is no one country in the world where all women can expect to receive these rights.”


On November 12th, Kim Kardashian tries to break the Internet by posing nude on the cover of the independent American magazine “Paper”. Even though the plan didn’t work, she got everyone to talk about her.


The British Fashion Awards have once again rewarded the best in the industry. The big winners were Victoria Beckham, who won the Brand of the Year Award; Anna Wintour, who recieved the Outstanding Achievement Award and Alexander McQueen won the Red Carpet Designer. Model Cara Delevingne was awarded Best Model of the year while actress Emma Watson took home the award for British Style. In total , 17 awards were given to those who were outstanding in the fashion industry.

The Victoria’s Secret Show was held in London for the first time on December 2nd. Singers Ariana Grande, Taylor Swift, Ed Sheeran and Hozier performed while 50 super models catwalked in the most amazing, expensive and extravagant lingerie. Brazilian super models Adriana Lima and Alessandra Ambrosio had the honor to walk with the “fantasy bra”- each encrusted with 16,000 precious stones (diamonds, rubies and sapphires) worth £1.27m. The show will air on TV December 9th.
